Alfa Laval Plate and Shell Heat Exchanger

Plate and shell heat exchangers are used to transfer heat between two fluids. They are available in various sizes and configurations.

They can be adapted to meet customer’s specific needs by using different plate materials and varying the spacing between plates.

Plate and shell heat exchangers are welded to a metal shell and can be made from stainless steel, carbon steel, titanium and other alloys. They can handle low pressure and high temperature applications, corrosive attack, fouling/scaling conditions and cyclic duties.

plate shell heat exchanger

A plate and shell heat exchanger is an efficient device for transferring heat between fluids at different temperatures. The device uses several flat plates stacked together to form a series of channels that allow the liquids to flow though.

The plates of a plate and shell heat exchanger are manufactured from metals that are durable and can withstand extreme temperatures. They are often spaced by rubber sealing gaskets.

Plates are pressed and compressed to form channels, which create troughs at right angles to the flow direction of the fluids. These troughs interlink with the other plates to form a series of parallel flow channels.

In order to function properly, a plate and shell heat exchanger needs a baffle that is positioned across the tubes. This prevents the lower pressure fluid from mixing with the higher pressure fluid and causing fouling or overheating.

Tie rods and spacers are also required to maintain a proper spacing between the tube sheets. These components also help in directing the flow of the fluids inside the shell.

brazed plate heat exchanger

Brazed plate heat exchangers are compact, efficient and durable liquid-to-liquid heat transfer units. They are fabricated from thin acid-resistant precision stamped stainless steel plates bonded together with copper brazed gaskets.

These heat exchangers are designed to operate in a variety of industrial, hydronic, and refrigeration applications. Their low size and light weight make them ideal for space-restricted applications.

BPHEs (Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers) utilize up to 200 embossed pattern-embossed stainless steel plates that are turned 180 degrees and brazed together to form two channels that distribute hot and cold fluids in counter current flow. This unique channel configuration promotes high turbulence, which contributes to their outstanding heat transfer capabilities.

These heat exchangers are compatible with water, Ethylene Glycol based Water Solution (EGW), and various other cooling fluids. They are also available in double wall construction for potable water isolation.

Plate and shell heat exchangers are a versatile and cost-effective option for heat transfer applications. Designed for use at high pressures and temperatures, they are ideal for many different industrial processes.

They can be manufactured from various materials and are available in a range of shapes, sizes and diameters. They can be arranged as counter-flow, co-current or cross-flow.

A sleeved, gasket-type cover plate seals one end of the shell and prevents leakage. A tubesheet sits within the shell to support the ends of the tubes and also provides an additional layer of strength.

Flow directors on the shell side are used to ensure that the primary and secondary fluids alternate between each other. Special corrugated plate patterns generate turbulence that promotes good heat transfer and minimises fouling.

These plate-and-frame heat exchangers are easy to adjust for capacity growth simply by adding or removing plates. This makes them an excellent choice for planning future expansion.

alfa laval plate heat exchanger

Alfa Laval offers a range of plate and shell heat exchangers. They can be used for many applications including marine, dairy processing, HVAC cooling, oil & gas and chemical.

Plate and shell heat exchangers are made up of several layers of flat plates that stack together to form fluid channels. This design provides a compact solution for many heating and cooling applications, particularly when space is an issue or when higher pressures are required.

These exchangers can be welded or brazed, and are available in stainless steel, copper, nickel and titanium. They are highly efficient and hygienic, with high service life.

They are also used for reducing heavy metal contamination in drinking water supplies, a challenge that has become increasingly common.

Alfa Laval offers a range of fusion-bonded plate heat exchangers for high temperature and pressure applications. They are maintenance free and can handle tough corrosive media.
